NetBeans is a successful open source project with a huge user base and a growing community, around 100 partners all over the world. Sun Microsystems founded NetBeans project in June 2000 and stills being its main supporter. Nowadays, there are two products:
- NetBeans IDE;
- NetBeans Platform.
NetBeans IDE is a development environment – a tool for programmers, which allows you to writr, compile, debug and install programs. The IDE is completely written in Java, but it supports any programming language. There is also a large number of modules to extend NetBeans IDE. NetBeans IDE is a free product, without any restrictions concerning how it can be used.
It’s also available NetBeans Platform; a modular and extensible base which can be used as infra-structure to create huge desktop applications. Partners provide plug-ins that can be easily integrated to the platform and can be used to develop tools and innovative solutions.
Both products are open source and are available to commercial or non commercial use. The source code is available to be used under Sun Public License (SPL).
